Soul in the Machine played at Burning Man in 2004 and 2005. Prior to the 2004 shows, we had only played out a single time. It was a great place to start because the Burning Man community is very appreciative of our efforts to combine music, technology and sculpture.

Burning Man is many different things to many different people. The thing we took away from it is the large contrast between how people dress and behave at Burning Man and how people dress and behave in everyday mainstream society. It is an illustration of how conformist everyday culture really is. In mainstream American culture, if one wishes to personalize their car, they get a vanity plate or buy a fancy set of rims. At Burning Man, if one wishes to personalize their car . . . . .
