Alan Turing was an English mathematician, logician, cryptanalyst and computer scientist. He was highly influential in the development of computer science, providing a formalization of the concepts of “algorithm” and “computation” with the Turing machine, which played a significant role in the creation of the modern computer. He was unquestionably one of the most brilliant minds of the twentieth century. One of his many real world achievements was devising a machine which could decode the messages of the German Enigma cryptography machine during World War 2. His work saved the lives of an incalculable number of Allied soldiers and seamen.

After the war, he was prosecuted for being gay – his impressive and important top secret wartime contributions were kept under wraps. He was sentenced to chemical castration (in the United Kingdom) and after beginning hormone therapy, he committed suicide, taking a bite out of an apple he had filled with cyanide. To treat an average person like this is a crime, to treat mistreat in this way someone who had contributed so much is a travesty. His example is an unfortunate glaring example of why society should not discriminate.

Respect to you Alan Turing.
